Sketches are an integral part of my life as a landscape artist. The plein air adventure comes in the cold, rain, snow or sun. The sizes are small, the process is quick: I capture the moment of what has triggered my imagination. Several of my best works began at the road side or shore line, with a 9x12 board, a few paints and a need to capture the moment before it’s gone. Sometimes a sketch remains just that. I captured the essence. Sometimes, after a while, they tell me to grow them. The sketch sits on an easel and we work out a plan.
At each show I exhibit in, I have a box of sketches available for the place when a small painting or two is the answer to that space. They are ready to hang and I’m ready to tell you the story behind each sketch.
